Beloved Aussie garage rock duo enter their new era - in more ways than one

A lot has happened in the world of vocalist and guitarist David Novak and drummer John-Henry Pajak AKA Polish Club in the three years since the release of their acclaimed Now We’re Cookin’ LP, both personally and professionally.

On the personal front, both David and John-Henry each got married, while David also underwent open heart surgery… and with life changes that big, the band have also made some pretty big changes too. Stepping away from releasing on major label Universal, the boys are moving into the world of self-managed, independent releases - a very exciting prospect for a band at Polish Club’s level and experience, meaning all of the creative freedom.

The first sounds from this new era is single and video Manila - an uplifting yet melancholic driving cut of indie garage rock goodness, taking things in a slightly more dreamy and wistful direction than the more raw and hard hitting rock and roll sounds we’ve heard from the guys so far, while still retaining Novak’s signature emotive vocals. Novak explains “There’s a reservation in the vocal to ‘Manila’ that we haven’t really explored in our previous music. It feels like a more earned climax towards the end of the song, when you really take your time with building a crescendo in a song.”

The song’s title was inspired by the Filipino half of Novak's family being from Manila, with the music video featuring DIY footage of the densely populated urban city. Take a an audio-visual trip to Manila:
